As you may know, Governor Reynolds announced yesterday that baseball and softball may begin June 1.
Today, superintendents across the state received further guidance from the Iowa Department of Education. We were informed that junior high sports will remain suspended through June 30. It’s important to note that junior high sports are not affiliated with the Iowa High School Athletic Association or the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
As a result of this guidance, the West Burlington Independent School District and the Southeast Iowa Super Conference are canceling junior high baseball for the 2020 summer season. Per IHSAA & IGHSAU rules, eighth-grade students are eligible to play high school baseball and softball if they elect to do so. Local town ball associations may also provide opportunities for seventh- and eighth-grade students to play in their leagues. Announcements from those leagues are still pending.
